Set amidst the wild openness of Alaska, Stabenow has created a hero, Liam Campbell, who is struggling with personal and professional setbacks. In this setting of "last frontier", the characters match the raw, roughness of the land -- hearty independence and strong loyalty fueling their interconnected lives. A newcomer to this village, Campbell must learn and understand quickly if he is to solve the why of a shooting at the post office, the assault of a fisherman and the murder of a town ruffian.
